North Adams Artist Census FAQ

What is the North Adams Artist Census?

This 10-minute, anonymous, online survey helps us all better understand the North Adams creative community and to assess its strengths and needs.

Who should take the North Adams Artist Census?

If you are a self-described artist who (1) lives in North Adams or (2) works in North Adams (including going to school) or (3) makes creative work in North Adams or (4) regularly participates in the North Adams artist community, we want you!

Our goal is for at least 300 area artists to participate. We know we can do it!

What will you do with the results?

Like with the regular census, having specific demographic data for our artist community will help area organizations and initiatives better understand and serve our population. In the aggregate, this data will make sure we prioritize what our community really needs, tout what we already have, and track the progress we are making through future data collection. Specific data is also at the core of successful grant applications – so the more information we have, the more likely we will be to leverage new money for our area!

The survey is anonymous, so your personal identity won’t be linked with the data you submit or shared with others.

View our 2020 & 2022 results here!

How often do you collect responses?

The artist census is conducted every two years. The first census was held in early 2020 (before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic) and the second in early 2022.

2020 & 2022 Census Results

An open invitation to creatives in across North Berkshire County and beyond!

Multiple times a year, we gather together at a different venue in the North Berkshires for an informal social hour with food and drinks. Catch up with old friends, make new ones, and maybe find the person who has that special skill you need for that next project! Each event includes a few short “toasts,” or announcements about upcoming projects in the community.

To find out when the next Quarterly Meet-Up is, join our North Berkshire Artist mailing list!

All are welcome. No invitation needed!

PROGRAM HISTORY
The North Adams Project ran from 2014-2021 as a program to attract artists to our hometown North Adams community. Grants were given to both established North Adams artists and those looking to relocate. Since then, we’ve provided free professional development support and more than $200,000 in grants to 100+ local artists. Now North Adams is known throughout the region for its robust creative community.

In 2021 our attention shifted to ensuring that those artists currently here have the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to set down deep, lasting roots in the Northern Berkshires.

Becky Waterhouse & Misa Chappell, 2021 North Adams Project Artists

2024 North Adams Project

In 2024 we expanded our local programming to offer the first-ever Capacity-Building Grant program for ALL of the Northern Berkshires*, with the aim of recognizing the interconnection of the vibrant creative communities in our region.

* The Northern Berkshires include 10 towns: Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Florida, Hancock, Lanesborough, New Ashford, North Adams, Savoy & Williamstown.

Selected artists received:

  • Individual capacity-building grants

  • Professional development in the form of priority access to Assets for Artists' workshops and 1-on-1 coaching.

  • Access to a tight-knit group of fellow cohort members from across the North Berkshire arts scene.

OTHER RESOURCES FOR NORTH ADAMS ARTISTS

If you’re a North Adams artist, sign up for our mailing list to be among the first to know when we announce applications for our 2023 North Adams Project cohort!

If you’re an artist considering a move to North Adams, please note that we no longer offer relocation incentives. However, we are happy to talk with you about your potential move and share what resources we can. We recommend starting with the other resources listed above. And you’ll also be eligible for future North Adams Project applications as soon as you’re here!

From 2020-2022, The Artist Impact Coalition (AIC) formed as a group of community arts organizers dedicated to making North Adams an amazing place for artists to live and work. The initiative’s energy focused on providing resources for artists to live and thrive in the Northern Berkshires, especially in the wake of the pandemic. The work was funded by a 2-year Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Using the Collective Impact model – with its growing body of evidence in support of highly coordinated intervention strategies to achieve long-lasting change in the face of stubborn obstacles – the Artist Impact Coalition was made up of local artists, artist service organizations, and city staff, with MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program acting as lead/backbone partner responsible for fiscal management.

Read the New York Times article about A4A and the AIC

Many different efforts were either spun off or strengthened from AIC’s work, including a monthly newsletter containing artist resources and happenings, and a reinforced focus on community gatherings (quarterly meet-ups, First Fridays, and more). In addition to these ongoing initiatives, AIC funded $50,000 worth of artist projects. Below is a list of what AIC supported or accomplished during its time.
