She toured Europe with the Baltic Youth Philharmonic, soloed with the Lakota West Symphonic Winds, was awarded a grant from the Golisano Foundation to teach ‘Drummin’ at Dazzle’ to intellectually disabled and inner-city youth, was invited to Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China to teach drum-set lessons and conduct the orchestra, and has studied under many of the greats in her field. Maria holds a Bachelor of Music from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music from Eastman School of Music, where she earned a Performer’s Certificate.
In 2009, Maria took advantage of an exceptional opportunity: studying with jazz, classical, and improvisational percussionist Anders Åstrand at his school in Piteå, Sweden. Her three years under Åstrand offered unparalleled opportunities, and allowed Maria to launch Ensemble Evolution in collaboration with two other percussion pilgrims in Piteå. Since its debut, Ensemble Evolution has given performances and masterclasses throughout Scandinavia, Australia, and the US and released two CDs.
Now stateside, Maria serves as Program Manager in the Entrepreneurial Musicianship Department at the New England Conservatory and accompanies Adaptive Dance classes at Boston Ballet. Maria is also in the process of instituting an amazing new project: Kādence.
Kādence will act as a hub for musical happenings with emphasis on percussion in the Greater Boston Area. The space will embody the versatility needed for any musician or educator’s endeavors by providing percussion instruments, technology and electronic equipment, knowledgeable personnel, and the liberty and resources to help musicians reach their creative potential.
