If you’re looking for Adria Moynihan, you may not find her in the usual places. In August, Adria moved with her studio group – Running with Scissors, where she shares equipment with creative vibes with 35 other Portland artists – to its new Bayside location. And the following month, she got married. Congratulations, Adria Moynihan Rusk!
Adria’s paintings investigate and celebrate. Her portraits (of humans and, yes, dogs & cats — these are her most popular commissions) are careful studies of character and emotion. Often rendered with a brightly colored, indistinct background, they create an atmospheric and intimate effect that brings the subject to the foreground. Even when that subject is a springer spaniel, Adria paints it with obvious sensitivity.
Adria knows that her interest in joy and beauty put her somewhat at odds with the prevailing artistic culture. In her still lifes and waterscapes, she celebrates the simple and satisfying beauty of the world around her.
After painting (and of course, Mr. Rusk), Adria’s other great love is teaching. Adria offers private drawing and painting lessons at her studio, where she encourages novice artists to find their niche and be creative while building technical skills.
While earning her BA in Fine Art from Portland State University, Adria studied art history and painting abroad in Mexico and Spain. She has shown her work in a number of galleries in the northeast and Pacific northwest. Learn more about Adria at her website.
