Last week Governor Deval Patrick announced $500,000 in state funds for individual development accounts (IDAs) in Massachusetts, a first for the state. Among the “more than two dozen grassroots organizations” is our local Berkshire Community Action Council, slated to receive $10,000 in IDA match funds as the lead agency of our Berkshire County asset development initiative. We have to raise some additional local funds and can then enroll our first five IDA account-holders in northern Berkshire County.
IDA advocates around Massachusetts are counting on success from all the recipients of this initial round of state support so that the governor and legislature will look kindly on asset development in future budgets. We’ll do our best to deliver results in the Berkshires. We’ve studied our maps and built our boat; now is as good a time as any to cast off from shore and figure out along the way what else we need to know. Was it Harry Truman who said, “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”
