What’s Assets for Artists?

Assets for Artists — a collaborative program providing financial and business training and matched savings accounts to low-income artists — is administered by MASS MoCA, the Midas Collaborative and Arthome, in cooperation with many local partners.

Since 2008, Assets for Artists has piloted an innovative matched savings grant program and financial and business training opportunities for low- to moderate-income artists. Initially launched in Berkshire County, Assets for Artists broadened its scope in 2011 to provide opportunities to artists throughout Massachusetts, with further expansion in 2012-2013 into Portland, Maine; New York City; and Rhode Island.

By meeting savings goals and by completing the required training, participating artists can receive grant funds as a savings match for “working capital” to invest in their work as an artistic micro-enterprise.

Profiles of some of the participating artists can be found here. Follow us on Twitter @Assets4Artists, or on our Facebook page. Announcements about future application rounds will be made there.

You can read a little bit about the financial training here, and a little bit about the business training here.

And there’s a detailed article about the program (in pdf form) from the Berkshire Trade & Commerce monthly business newspaper here.
